About Us - Our Story About Us - Our Story

Our story.

Gathering centuries of plant wisdom.

Our founder, Dr Sandra Clair, grew up in Switzerland where plant medicine has always been fully integrated into the official medical system, and readily accepted as the basis of modern medicine with over 2,500 years of history.

In 1992, following a chance encounter with a renowned traditional Swiss herbal expert, midwife and nun, Sister Pauline, Sandra spent three years being taught the revered secrets of traditional European medicine. This apprenticeship, and further formal study, enabled Sandra to learn about the unique properties of plants, their medicinal actions and the techniques for harvesting and preparing the highest quality plant medicines.

Establishing New Zealand roots.

When she left Europe in 1995 to travel, Sandra brought her expertise and a vision for helping people to be healthier to New Zealand.

Settling on the Otago Peninsula, Sandra opened a practice in Dunedin and discovered quality plant remedies in New Zealand sadly lacking. She began formulating a professional range, and was delighted to disover the quality and potency of plants growing naturally in the wild alpine environments of Central Otago was of similar quality,  and sometimes superior to, those grown in the Swiss Alps.

Sandra quickly gained a reputation for her effective products and in 1998, founded Artemis. The name is borrowed from the Greek deity, goddess of the wilderness, protector of women and children.

Thriving at home and overseas.

A proudly New Zealand owned and operated business, Artemis was named one of the top 10 New Zealand businesses in the 2015 Westpac Business Growth Awards. It was the winner of the Deloitte Fast 50 Award in 2012 for the “Fastest Growing Manufacturer in Otago and the Lower South Island”. Within the same year, Artemis was also announced the winner for ethical and environmentally responsible business practices in the Westpac OBIZ Ethics awards, proving that a business can be both successful and ethical.

In 2018 Artemis entered the Chinese market, exporting products based primarily on Central Otago Thyme.  China sales are consistently increasing each year, due to the quality of the products and the innate understanding and appreciation of traditional medicine, with special focus on immunity and respiratory ranges.

To be continued.

We are excited about the next chapter for Artemis. As more people in New Zealand, and globally, seek out natural solutions for their  health and wellbeing, at Artemis we stay true our roots. To continuing a tradition of formulating powerful plant medicines that are proven by tradition, backed by science.
